Extracts from the Dhammapada

If one is a great reciter of the scriptures,
The indolent man who does not act according to them
Is like a cowherd counting the cattle of others.
He becomes not a participant in the spiritual life.

If one is a reciter of even a little of the scriptures,
One who practices the Dhamma, having forsaken greed, 
hatred, and delusion,
That fully-comprehending one with mind well-freed
-- one free from clinging in this life or the next -- 
He is a sharer in the spiritual life.

From (clinging to) what is dear arises sorrow.
From (clinging to) what is dear arises fear.
For one who is completely free from (clinging to) what is dear,
He has no sorrow -- whence fear?

From (worldly) love arises sorrow,
From (worldly) love arises fear.
To one who is freed from (worldly) love,
He has no sorrow -- whence fear?

From attachment arises sorrow, 
From attachment arises fear.
For one who is freed from attachment, 
There is no sorrow -- whence fear?

From desire arises sorrow,
From desire arises fear.
For one who is freed from desire
There is no sorrow -- whence fear?

Heedfulness is the way to the deathless.
Heedlessness is death's path.
The heedful do not die.
Those who are heedless are as if dead.

Having especially known this,
In heedfulness they are wise.
Take pleasure in heedfulness
Delighting in the domain of the Noble Ones.

Just like a deep lake,
Clear and calm,
Just so, having heard the truth,
The wise become calmed.

As a solid rock
Does not move in the wind,
Likewise the wise
Are not moved in blame or praise.

The world is blinded.
Few here see clearly.
Like a bird freed from a net
A few go to heaven.

Irrigators lead waters,
Fletchers fashion arrows.
Carpenters fashion wood.
The wise control themselves.


Rare is the attainment of the human state,
Rare is mortal life,
Rare is the hearing of the true Dhamma,
Rare is the arising of Buddhas.

The non-doing of all evil,
The acquisition of skilfulness,
The purification of one's own mind;
This is the teaching of the Buddhas.

Never, indeed, are hatreds
Pacified by hatred in this world.
They are pacified by love.
This is a timeless truth.

One should not associate with evil friends,
One should not associate with the low among men,
One should associate with spiritual friends,
One should associate with the noble among men.

All fear the rod; all fear death.
Having made comparison with oneself,
You should not kill or cause to kill.

All fear the rod; life is dear to all.
Having made comparison with oneself,
You should not kill or cause to kill.


By means of diligence, 
Indra became foremost of the gods.
Diligence is praised,
Heedlessness is always despised.

Just like a beautiful flower,
Colorful but lacking fragrance,
So fine words are fruitless
To one who does not practice them.

Just like a beautiful flower,
Colorful and fragrant,
Thus well-spoken words
Are fruitful to the one who practices them.

Long is the night to the wakeful one.
Long is the league to the wearisome one.
Long is the cycle of rebirth to the foolish;
Those not seeing the true Dhamma.

For the man who acts heedlessly,
Craving grows like a vine.
He drifts from existence to existence
Like a monkey in the forest desiring fruit.

Whomever this contemptible
Clinging and lust conquers in this world,
His griefs increase,
Like the growing biranam [plant].

And who conquers this contemptible
Hard-to-eradicate lust in this world,
Sorrows fall away from him
As a drop of water from a lotus leaf.


Do not be angry, speak the truth,
When asked, give from the little you have.
By means of these conditions
You should go to the vicinity of the gods.

Protect against bodily anger.
Let one be restrained with respect to the body.
Forsaking bodily misconduct,
Practice restraint by means of the body.

Protect against vocal anger.
Let there be restraint by means of the voice.
Forsaking misconduct of speech
Practice restraint by means of speech.

He who kills living creatures
And tells lies,
Takes the non-given in the world
And goes with the wife of another,

And the man who gives himself up
To brews and liquor,
Here in this world;
That one uproots himself.


If you can win an intelligent,
Fellow-faring, steadfast friend,
You should fare delighted and mindful,
You should overcome all obstacles.

And if you can't win an intelligent
Fellow-faring, steadfast friend,
Thus like a king abandoning his conquered realm
Fare alone like an elephant in the elephant forest.

When the fool is a slothful,
Greedy, drowsy, restless one,
Like a well-foddered great pig,
The fool returns to the womb again and again.

You should be those who delight in heedfulness.
Protect your own mind,
Extract yourself from a bad path,
Like the elephant stuck in the mud.


Restraint of the mind --
Hard to restrain, insubstantial,
And which follows its own desires -- is good.
A tamed mind leads to happiness.

The wise should protect the mind --
Hard to behold, subtle,
And which follows its own desires.
A guarded mind leads to happiness.

For one who is of unsteady mind,
Who doesn't know the Dhamma,
And whose tranquility is superficial,
His wisdom will not attain fullness.

If a fool associates with a wise one
For as long as he lives,
He will no more perceive the Dhamma
Than the ladle tastes the soup.

If an intelligent one associates with a wise one
For even a moment,
He sees the Dhamma swiftly,
Like the tongue tastes the soup.

It is good not to do that action,
Having done which, one repents,
For which one experiences the woeful results,
Tearful and lamenting.

It is good to have done that action,
Having done which, one repents,
The results of which one experiences
Delighted, with happy mind.

Firmly establish yourself in what is befitting,
Then should you consel others.
Thus the wise one
May not become defiled.


If a man should do evil,
He should not do it again and again.
He should not take delight in it;
Suffering comes from the accumulation of evil.

If a man should do good,
He should do it again and again.
He should take delight in it;
Happiness stems from the accumulation of meritorious action.

Even the evildoer will find happiness
As long as his evil ripens not.
Once his evil ripens,
Then the evildoer experiences the consequences of his sins.

Even the doer of good will experience evil,
As long as his good does not ripen.
Once his good ripens,
The the good person experiences good.

If there is no wound in the hand,
You should carry poisin with the hand.
Poison does not enter the non-wound.
There is no evil for the non-doer.

Some are born in the womb.
The evil-doer proceeds to hell
And the righteous proceed to heaven.
The undefiled are freed at death.


Who will conquer this world
And the world of the dead, along with the world of the gods?
Who will pluck the well-taught word of the Dhamma
As a skillful person plucks a flower?

The one in training will conquer this world
And the word of the dead, along with the world of the gods.
The one in training will gather like a flower
The well-taught verses of truth.

Knowing this body to be like froth
And understanding it's mirage-like nature,
Having cut off the flowery arrows of Mara,
He will go beyond the sight of the king of death.

Which fool knows his folly
By this he is indeed also wise.
And the fool who thinks himself wise
This one truly is called a fool.


Just as the rain pierces through 
An ill-thatched house,
Thus the undeveloped mind 
Desire pierces through.

Just as the rain does not pierce through
A well-thatched house,
Thus the developed mind
Desire does not pierce through.

Here he grieves, and having died he grieves;
The evildoer grieves in both places.
He grieves and suffers
Having seen the impurity of his own actions.

Here he rejoices, and having died rejoices;
One who has done good actions rejoices in both places.
He rejoices and is glad
Having seen the purity of his own actions.

He burns here and having died he burns;
The evildoer burns in both places.
He burns, thinking, "Evil is done by me."
Gone to an ill destiny he burns further.

He is joyful here and having died he is joyful;
The doer of good is joyful in both places.
He is joyful, thinking, "Good is done by me."
Gone to a good destiny he rejoices further.
